Sept. 16: Anonymous source submits audio (1:41 p.m.)

An anonymous source emails sports website an expletive-laced Bo Pelini rant about fans and media members, recorded in the wake of Nebraska’s dramatic 34-27 comeback win over Ohio State in October of 2011. “It’s only fair that the fan base of Nebraska know what Pelini thinks about them,” the source said. This information wasn’t released until Sept. 17, after publication of the audio.

Sept. 16: Tape surfaces (4:05 p.m.)

Deadspin posts the Pelini tirade, which goes viral.

Sept. 16: Pelini apologizes (7:27 p.m.)

In a statement, Pelini apologizes for his comments. “I was venting following a series of emotional events which led to this moment. That being said, these comments are in no way indicative of my true feelings. I love it here in Nebraska and feel fortunate to be associated with such a great university and fan base. I again apologize to anyone whom I have offended.”

Sept. 16: Perlman, Eichorst statements (7:29 p.m.)

UNL Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst release their first statements on the situation. Perlman: “I am aware of the publication of Coach Pelini’s comments, I am disappointed and in discussions with Shawn Eichorst about addressing the issue.” Eichorst: “I am disheartened and disappointed by the 2011 comments published today attributed to Coach Pelini about our dedicated and passionate fans and supporters. I have spoken with Chancellor Perlman and I have addressed the situation with Bo and expressed our deep concern.”

Sept. 17: ‘We’re reflecting’ (approx. 12:30 p.m.)

After his annual State of the University speech, Harvey Perlman declines to answer questions about the situation. “I’m not going to talk about football today,” referring reporters to a previous statement on the issue. Asked to make that statement again, Perlman said, “We’re disappointed and we are reflecting on the situation.”

Sept. 17: Pelini speaks to the press (approx. 6 p.m.)

“I fully anticipate coaching this weekend,” Bo Pelini said Tuesday as he met with reporters and further discussed the fallout from recording made during a private conversation after a game two years ago.

Sept. 18: Bo knows (7:15 a.m.)

In an interview on a Sirius XM radio show Wednesday, Pelini tells the host he has an idea who sent the recording to Deadspin and that he’s confident about his future at Nebraska.

Sept. 18: Put it to rest (11:50 a.m.)

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman and Director of Athletics Shawn Eichorst issue a statement calling Pelini’s comments “concerning” but said they are ready to put the matter to rest. The comments were known to the athletic department, including former A.D. Tom Osborne for more than a year before they were sent to Deadspin.
