Game of the week
>> Football: Carroll (2-1) at Harlan (3-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday. Carroll is rated fourth in western Iowa (Class 4-A/3-A), while Harlan is second in WI and second in the state in 3-A. Last year, Carroll entered the playoffs at 3-6, while Harlan had been 32-0 in first-round playoff games. The Tigers won 28-7. This is a non-district game.
>> Volleyball: Clarinda (11-2, 2-0) at CB Lewis Central (5-2, 2-0), 7:30 p.m. Thursday. There are just three unbeatens left in the Hawkeye Ten Conference race, and two of them meet here (Harlan is the other).
>> Football: Griswold (2-1, 1-0) at A-H-S-T (3-0, 1-0), 7 p.m. Friday. Key game in a balanced Class A, District 8 race. Griswold is rated fifth in WI (2-A/1-A/A) and the Vikings are sixth. Both teams won playoff openers last year and fell in the second round.
>> Volleyball: Red Oak Invitational, 9 a.m. Saturday. Schools entered: Atlantic, CB Abraham Lincoln, Clarinda, Creston, Denison-Schleswig, Red Oak, South Page and Treynor.
>> Cross country: Carroll Kuemper Invitational, 9 a.m. Saturday at Swan Lake State Park, Carroll. More than 20 schools are scheduled to participate.
Iowa tops track figures
Iowa led the nation in state track meet attendance last year, according to research done by Kevin Mangan for American Track and Field magazine.
Iowa had 34,311 at its meet, easily surpassing the rest of the top five: Ohio (27,441), Texas (26,102), Oregon (23,155) and Kansas (20,001).
>> Spencer Phillips, Fremont-Mills: Rushed 37 times for 256 yards and a touchdown, and made 19 tackles, including three solos for losses, in a 45-34 Eight-Man win over CAM.
>> Zach Brewer, Nodaway Valley: In a 56-12 win over Missouri Valley, he carried 21 times for 222 yards and five touchdowns.
>> Jackson Baker, Shenandoah: In a 19-15 win over Greene County, he carried seven times for 97 yards, passed for 63 and a score, and made six tackles.
>> Nate Gettys, Harlan: Carried 23 times for 199 yards and four touchdowns in a 42-14 win over Perry.
>> Trevor Frain, Creston/O-M: In a 28-14 win over Atlantic, he carried eight times for 104 yards and two scores, caught two passes for 47 yards and made 19 tackles, including a sack.
>> Caleb Schaaf, Griswold: Carried 11 times for 113 yards and two touchdowns, caught two passes for 70 yards and a score, and made nine tackles in a 41-7 win over Underwood.
>> Addison Ross, Carroll: Completed 11 of 14 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns in a 46-7 win over Denison-Schleswig.
>> Kyle Bauerkemper, A-H-S-T: Rushed 25 times for 114 yards and a touchdown in a 24-6 win over Westwood.
>> Brady Charbonneau, Logan-Magnolia: Carried 11 times for 110 yards and three touchdowns in a 47-12 win over West Monona.
>> Zach Barton, Southwest Valley: Rushed 13 times for 134 yards and a score, and made 12 tackles in a 51-14 Eight-Man win over Nishnabotna.
>> Ben Pautsch, Charter Oak-Ute: Ran 18 times for 146 yards and two touchdowns in a 54-19 Eight-Man win over Ar-We-Va.
>> Cole Neary, Carroll Kuemper: Completed 10 of 10 passes for 200 yards and five touchdowns in an 84-0 win over Clarinda Academy.
>> The Creston boys won a team title at the Ballard Invitational for the first time in school history on Monday, taking top honors in the 10-team Class B. Creston finished in front of runner-up Nevada by a 74-93 margin. Scorers for the Panthers included Cooper McDermott (third), Jay Wolfe (fifth), Ben Irr (eighth), Garrett Taylor (14th) and Isaiah Foster (44th). In all, 43 schools in four classes and around 1,800 runners competed.
