Martinez not suited up for warmups

Senior quarterback Taylor Martinez trotted out of the locker room wearing a gray T-shirt and black shorts for Nebraska’s on-field warmups about 45 minutes before the South Dakota State game. No helmet. No pads. No jersey.

It’s all but a certainty now that Martinez will end his consecutive starts streak at 32 games. He hasn’t missed a start since the Colorado game in 2010.

But NU coaches have hinted at this possibility all week. Martinez (turf toe and perhaps a lingering shoulder injury) didn’t practice.

Coach Bo Pelini said Thursday that redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong had a slight edge over senior Ron Kellogg. The video board announced Armstrong and Kellogg as the starters during its pre-game rundown of the lineups.

Pelini added Thursday that Martinez would not play if he weren’t 100 percent healthy. The Huskers have a bye week next.
