Game of the week
>> Football: Carroll (5-1, 3-0) at Sioux City Heelan (6-0, 3-0), 7:30 p.m. Friday. This is one of the state’s marquee games of the week. Carroll dropped a few jaws last Friday, dismantling previously unbeaten Spencer 42-14. Heelan returned a 3,100-yard passer (Trent Solsma) and 1,000-yard receiver (Connor Niles) from last year’s 3-A runner-up, and they haven’t disappointed. Solsma is throwing for 231 yards per game with 21 TDs and 2 INTs, while Niles leads 3-A with 12 TD catches and is third in yardage (629). Something will have to give here, as Heelan leads 3-A in scoring average (47.5), while Carroll is tied for first in defensive average (7.0). The Tigers prefer to move it on the ground with fireplug Anthony Beyerink (930 rushing yards, 10 TDs), but first-year starting quarterback Addison Ross (895 passing yards, 10 TDs, 1 INT) has been efficient and effective. Heelan is rated first in the state and first in WI, while Carroll is fifth in the state and third in WI. In the BCMoore computer-generated power rankings, Heelan is first in 3-A and Carroll second.
>> Volleyball: Treynor (19-10, 7-1) at Underwood (22-4, 8-0), 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Treynor stubbed its toe on Tuesday against Tri-Center, but can still earn a share of the Western Iowa Conference regular-season title with a win over its longtime nemesis.
>>Volleyball: Fremont-Mills (17-3) vs. Stanton (30-5) in Corner Conference tournament final at Farragut, 7:30 p.m. Stanton goes for its 10th straight tournament title. Try to do anything for 10 years straight. It’s not easy.
>>Football: A-H-S-T (6-0, 4-0) at East Mills (5-1, 3-1), 7 p.m. Friday. This one will go a long way in determining the District 8 champ in Class A. Griswold (3-1), which has lost to A-H-S-T and plays East Mills next week, is the other team in the hunt.
>> Cade Confer, Stanton: In a 68-40 Eight-Man win over Essex, he rushed 16 times for 185 yards and three TDs, caught two passes for 79 yards and made 14 tackles.

>> Josh Hopkins, East Mills: In a 47-13 win over Underwood, he carried eight times for 83 yards and a touchdown, and made eight tackles.
>> Carroll Kuemper defense: Held Shenandoah to 31 total yards in a 35-0 win that was called at the half due to inclement weather.
