World-Herald staff writer Steven Pivovar shares his views from Saturday morning’s Creighton men’s basketball practice.

* * *

Seen: Sophomore center Mo Oginni showing off his athleticism during a five-on-five drill when he speared a rebound out of the air and dunked it one-handed.

Heard: “How would you guys rate your leadership today? Is anyone picking up other guys or are we just trying to check this practice off the list? Right now, we’re not getting better.” — Creighton coach Greg McDermott, midway through practice.

Seen: A noticeable pickup in intensity in the final 40 minutes of practice.

Heard: “Guys, we have to get smarter. Understand who your teammates are and what kind of help they need.” — McDermott, during a 3-on-3 defensive drill.

Seen: Some inspired play during that same drill from junior guard Austin Chatman that had his coaches and teammates shouting praise for his efforts.

Seen: Another crowded gym as about 20 high school coaches sat in on practice.

On tap: The Bluejays practiced again Saturday afternoon but will have just one workout Sunday afternoon.
