Creighton’s preseason spot pleases McDermott

NEW YORK — Doug McDermott figures Creighton’s placement of third in the new Big East preseason poll is just about perfect.

“I think it’s a good number,” McDermott said. “I wouldn’t have been a big fan of being picked first. Being third gives us the respect from the other teams, while at the same time it gives us something to motivate us because we do feel like we’re the best team.”

McDermott, the league’s preseason player of the year, and guard Grant Gibbs were the Bluejays player representatives at the event, held at the Chelsea Piers on the Hudson River.

Both players agreed the tone of a lot of the questions that were being directed their way was how would the Midwestern boys that can shoot the basketball going to fit into the rough, tough new league.

“People don’t really know what we’re about,” McDermott said. “They haven’t seen as much as these other teams, even Xavier and Butler. They’re a little more established because of their recent success.

“We still have some work to do there.”
