Nebraska guard Shavon Shields has been named the Big Ten player of the week.
The 6-foot-7 sophomore from Olathe, Kan., scored a game-high 28 points in Nebraska’s 79-55 season-opening win over 2013 Sweet 16 participant Florida Gulf Coast.
He shot 61.5 percent (8 of 13) from the field and was 12 of 12 from the free throw line. He pulled down six rebounds and dished out three assists with zero turnovers in 35 minutes
His 28 points were the most by a Big Ten player during the opening weekend of the season and the most for a Nebraska player in a season opener since 2008
It was his first Big Ten weekly honor.
