Nebraska coach Bo Pelini has a beat-up offensive line.
Junior guard Mike Moudy, who sustained a shoulder injury this week, is listed as doubtful for Saturday’s game against Michigan State. He joins senior right guard Spencer Long (out of the year, knee injury), senior left guard Jake Cotton (questionable, strained MCL) and senior tackle Jeremiah Sirles (questionable, strained MCL) in the training room with serious injuries.
“I promise you this: We’ll have five guys lined up on the offensive line,” Pelini said Thursday. “It’s going to be their job and their challenge to step up to the task.”
Wide receiver Jamal Turner (calf) is “probably 50/50 right now,” Pelini said.
Other quick hits from Thursday’s workout:
>> Pelini expects Nebraska’s crowd to be a big help, but he doesn’t want his team getting too distracted by the atmosphere. That’s been a problem at times in the Pelini era, especially on defense.
“The crowd’s great, it’s always a huge benefit to us,” Pelini said. “But that only does us good if you’re executing your football. They’re not going to play for us, the same way Michigan’s crowd didn’t play for them. At the end of the day, we have to execute at a high level. Our emotion will be high. The crowd will be great, it always gives us energy. But you’ve got keep it under control.”
>> The group of recruits heading in for the game is a “good crew,” Pelini said, who added “our recruiting’s moving right along.”
>> Michigan State quarterback Connor Cook, Pelini said, “does a lot of good thing and has a big arm.”
“He’s a talented kid who makes some young mistakes sometimes but he’s gotten better as the year’s gone on,” Pelini said. “They do a good job of protecting him in their scheme, and they play to his strengths. He can make all the throws. He’s got a big-time arm.”
Cook has thrown for 1,490 yards, 13 touchdowns and three interceptions this year.
