Creighton All-American Doug McDermott was named the national player of the week by ESPN.com’s Andy Katz and also earned Big East honors on Monday.

McDermott averaged 25.7 points and 5.7 rebounds in three Creighton wins to start the season. He shot 55.8 percent from the field, 53.3 percent from 3-point land, and 78.6 percent of his free throw attempts.

McDermott opened with 20 points in 20 minutes during a 46-point win over Alcorn State. Three days later McDermott had 37 points in 31 minutes of play in a 26-point victory over UMKC.

McDermott capped off his hot start with 20 points and five rebounds in an 83-79 win at Saint Joseph’s, helping Creighton overcome a 13-point deficit. McDermott’s traditional three-point play with 4.9 seconds left was his first career game-winner and came after the Bluejays had surrendered the lead just 23 seconds earlier.

Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Tulsa in a game scheduled for a 2:32 p.m. tip-off.
