When No. 2 Cozad (12-0) has the ball: Coach Brian Cargill’s Haymakers love to run the ball while averaging 39 points a game. Jake Paulsen has gashed opponents at a 10.4-yard clip while gaining 2,335 yards and scoring 28 times on the ground. Colin Wetovick averages 11 yards a carry while adding 761 yards and nine touchdowns. When Nathan Bubak does throw, he’s connected with Conor Young for seven of his 10 touchdown passes. Bo Kitrell and Zach Kramer are the tackle leaders for Ashland, which is giving up 17 points a game.
When No. 8 Ashland-Greenwood (11-1) has the ball: Coach Ryan Thompson’s Bluejays, averaging 31 points a game, are quarterback-centric. Gunnar Garner has rushed for 1,152 yards and thrown for 1,402, with 26 combined touchdowns. He has thrown 13 interceptions. Tyler Craven is the top receiver. Wetovick and Young have four picks apiece for Cozad, which is allowing 9.5 points a game. Alex Boryca is its tackles leader.
Stu’s pick: Ashland-Greenwood has prevailed against two potent, speedy teams — Lincoln Christian and Columbus Lakeview — to make its first final. Another such team is Cozad, although the passing game is a lesser threat this time. Can’t pick against the Haymakers, though, not after watching them take apart then-unbeaten Boone Central in the semifinals.
