Recruiting: Nebraska lands junior college cornerback
Sam McKewon Omaha World-Herald

Nebraska’s 2014 recruiting class added East Mississippi Community College defensive back Byerson Cockrell to the fold Friday. The commit was first confirmed by Huskers Illustrated. The 6-foot-2, 185-pound high two-star/low three-star prospect visited Nov. 29 for NU’s 38-17 loss to Iowa.

He could project to corner, safety or nickel, though the Huskers need more immediate help at corner and nickel than they do safety. Cockrell will enroll at NU for the upcoming semester and be available for spring practice.

Cockrell had offers from Southern Mississippi and Middle Tennessee State, among other schools. He finished his 2013 season with 28 tackles, two sacks, three interceptions and three pass breakups. East Mississippi, undefeated and ranked No. 2 the National Junior College Athletic Association, plays No. 1 Georgia Military College for the national title Sunday in Mississippi Bowl VI. The game will be held in Biloxi, Miss. Cockrell will talk about his commitment after the game.

Calls to several East Mississippi CC coaches have not yet been returned.
