Jack Hoffman’s 69-yard touchdown run earned more recognition Wednesday as it was named USA Today’s “Best Emotional Moment of 2013″ in the organization’s “Year in Sports” vote.
Hoffman’s run captured 52 percent of the vote, nearly doubling the second-place finisher. A singing of the national anthem at a Boston Bruins’ game following the Boston Marathon bombings came in second with 27 percent of the vote. The other nominees were the tributes to retiring Yankees’ closer Mariano Rivera (9 percent), Andy Murray’s Wimbledon win (7 percent) and NBA star Jason Collins coming out (4 percent).
Video of the young cancer patient’s run during the Husker spring game run went viral, and the 8-year-old has since met President Obama, got his own Upper Deck trading card and won the ESPY for best moment (among other honors).
Hoffman’s family learned earlier this year that his pediatric brain cancer was in remission.
