Scouting South Dakota State: Steph Paluch went coast-to-coast for a game-winning layup with four seconds left to lift the Jackrabbits to a 67-66 victory Thursday night at Western Illinois. … The Jackrabbits have played the nation’s 30th-toughest schedule, with top-150 RPI wins over Penn State (46), Central Michigan (67), TCU (101), Wisconsin-Green Bay (122), IUPUI (126) and Georgetown (140). Six of their seven losses have been to top-100 teams: Stanford (1), Notre Dame (6), Middle Tennessee State (28), Creighton (48), BYU (57) and Florida Gulf Coast (92). … The Jackrabbits’ realtimerpi.com rating was No. 72 as of Friday afternoon. … Megan Waytashek leads a balanced team with 11.9 points per game — eight players average at least 4.3. … Backup Tara Heiser shoots 44.1 percent (15 of 34) from 3. … SDSU is last in the Summit with an average of 19.6 turnovers per game. … South Dakota State swept UNO last season, winning 74-64 in Omaha and 69-56 in Brookings.

Scouting UNO: The Mavs’ 22-point home loss to Western Illinois in their Summit League opener is a little easier to take considering the Leathernecks pushed five-time defending league champion South Dakota State to the buzzer on Thursday. … UNO continues to lead the Summit in field goal percentage defense (.353) and 3-point defense (.265). South Dakota State ranks second in both categories. … Backup guard Felicia Anderson is UNO’s second leading scorer at 9.8 points per game. She’s third in the Summit with an average of 2.4 made 3-pointers per game. Teammate Ericka House, the Summit’s third-leading scorer at 18.2 points per game, averages a league-best 3.2 3s. … In two league games, Mikaela Shaw is averaging 15.5 points and 8.5 rebounds. … UNO averages 15.5 turnovers, but has averaged 20.7 in its last three games. … UNO held North Dakota State to 29.2-percent shooting in Thursday’s 66-48 win, the fourth time this season (three against Division I teams) that the Mavs kept an opponent under 30 percent. … UNO’s 14 steals against the Bison matched its highest total since getting 18 against Briar Cliff on Dec. 3, 2011.
