UNO’s Spenner, Miller earn weekly Summit League honors

UNO track athlete Sami Spenner and women’s tennis player Hylan Miller received Summit League player of the week honors, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Spenner was named the league’s outdoor track and field athlete of the week after breaking her own school record in the triple jump Saturday. The senior finished second with a wind-legal jump of 41 feet, 10-½ inches, topping her old record by more than a foot.

The award is Spenner’s second outdoor track and field athlete of the week honor of her career and her first this season.

Miller, a freshman on the Mav tennis team, won all three of her singles and doubles matches during the week of April 8 to 14. Miller’s weekly honor was the first of the …

UNO’s doubleheader with North Dakota State canceled

The UNO baseball team’s Sunday doubleheader at North Dakota State has been canceled due to cold weather conditions in Fargo, it was announced Sunday afternoon.

The two games were originally scheduled as non-conference contests. In league play on Saturday, Omaha swept a doubleheader from the Bison with two shutouts, 2-0 in 10 innings and 10-0 in seven innings.

The Mavericks are 16-12 (5-3 Summit League) on the season and return to action on Wednesday against Nebraska at Haymarket Park at 6:35 p.m.…

Softball: Mavericks’ doubleheader with UMKC canceled

UNO’s home softball doubleheader Tuesday against Kansas City has been canceled because of UMKC’s delayed travel home following a weekend series at Grand Canyon in Phoenix.

The Kangaroos played an 11-inning game at Grand Canyon on Saturday and were unable to make their flight back to Kansas City. UMKC was not able to find a flight out of Phoenix in time to return home and get to Omaha for Tuesday’s games.…

UNO extends Hansen’s contract

UNO announced Sunday that the school had extended men’s basketball coach Derrin Hansen’s contract to a four-year deal through June 30, 2018.

Hansen is 149-121 over nine seasons as UNO’s head coach. In 2013-14, Hansen guided the Mavericks to a 17-record and the program’s first Division I postseason appearance in school history. The Mavericks went 1-1 in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.

Mavs’ Simmons eliminated from dunk contest

UNO senior Justin Simmons was eliminated from the Dark Horse Dunker contest on Monday, falling to winner Marcus Lewis of Eastern Kentucky in the final round.

The winner was determined by a five-week online fan vote through Facebook that began Feb. 10.

“I truly appreciate the great support from our fans through this entire dunk contest,” Simmons said. “I wish I could thank everyone personally. We made a great run to the championship round and came up just short. This was an incredible opportunity in my senior year, and I am thankful for the chance to have represented Omaha nationally.”

Voting began with 16 finalists, and Simmons won his round one matchup against Deonte Jones of Texas Wesleyan. Round two, which began Feb. 24, pitted …

UNO will hold first-round game in CollegeInsider.com tournament

The UNO men’s basketball team has been tapped to host a first-round game in the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, the university announced Tuesday.

The Mavs’ opponent will be announced Sunday when the full tournament bracket is released.

“We are thrilled that we have the chance host a CIT game at Ralston Arena and provide a postseason opportunity for our men’s basketball program,” UNO Athletics Director Trev Alberts said in a press release. “Particularly for our seniors — three of whom stayed and two of whom came knowing postseason opportunities might not be available for a transitioning school — this is a way to honor their commitment to UNO and see their careers close on a high note. UNO’s Spenner named Midwest Region field athlete of the year

Sami Spenner has been named the Midwest Region women’s field athlete of the year, the USTFCCCA announced Monday. The award winners were determined by a vote of USTFCCCA member coaches.

Spenner had a record-setting indoor season, becoming one of the best track athletes in the history of UNO track and field. During the 2013-14 season, she set three school records, was named Summit League Athlete of the Week on three occasions, athlete of the month for the month of January, and the USTFCCCA national athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 3 and March 3.

At the Jack Jennett Invitational on Jan. 31, she set the then-school record in the pentathlon with 4,406 points after winning all five events scored toward the pentathlon. …

Hockey: Josh Archibald named national player of the month

One day after picking up the NCHC’s top player award for February, UNO junior Josh Archibald was named the National Player of the Month by the Hockey Commissioners’ Association.

Archibald was the top-scoring player in Division I, scoring 10 goals and 16 points in eight games last month. He averaged two points and 1.25 goals per game in February, leading the NCAA in both categories. He is currently second in the nation with 28 goals, behind only Johnny Gaudreau (30) of Boston College, who has played in two more games.

He currently leads the NCHC in goals and points (41), both career highs. He also ranks first in the conference and in an eight-way tie for seventh in the NCAA with five game-winning goals. He …

UNO’s Archibald named NCHC player of the month

UNO right wing Josh Archibald has been named the player of the month for February by the National Collegiate Hockey Conference.

Archibald, a junior from Brainerd, Minn., led the NCHC and the NCAA in scoring in February with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points. His 10 goals were an NCAA best.

He had three multiple-goal games during February and has five in the last 12 games dating back to January.

Archibald averaged two points and 1.25 goals per game in February, leading the NCAA in both categories. He leads the NCHC in goals (28) and points (41), both career highs. He also ranks first in the conference and in an eight-way tie for seventh in the NCAA with five game-winning goals. He has …

Men’s basketball: Mavs’ Simmons a step closer to dunk contest

UNO guard Justin Simmons was one of four candidates to advance to the semifinals of the 2014 Dark Horse Dunker competition on Monday.

The contest is a bracket-style elimination competition that will send one contestant to College Slam Dunk Championships. Simmons won his Round One matchup against Deonte Jones of Texas Wesleyan, then beat Brison White of Northwestern State in Round Two by 40 votes.

The semifinals, where Simmons is facing Jordan Adams of Western State, and the finals will have open voting for one week each. The champion will be announced March 17 and the slam dunk contest will be held April 3 in Dallas.
