Sports Illustrated cover a big deal for Millard North, too

“I am a proud principal and a proud uncle, also,” he said. “Our family is pretty excited.”

Begley, who twirls and teaches baton for Sue’s Stepperettes, performed during Mustang basketball and football games.

Brian Begley said news of the cover was posted on the school and district Twitter pages.

“It’s kind of going viral around Millard,” he said.

St. Pat’s coach expects tough game from Mlnarik, Cyclones

North Platte St. Patrick basketball coach Bill O’Malley is very familiar with Clearwater/Orchard coach Shelly Mlnarik, the first woman to coach at the boys state tournament since 1925.

O’Malley is the cousin of Mlnarik’s husband, Ted.

“I remember playing in high school, she was a good high school player in Lynch,” O’Malley said.

The teams will meet Thursday in the first round of the Class D-1 state tournament, opening at 9 a.m. at Lincoln East.

O’Malley, whose team is 24-1 and ranked No. 1, grew up in Chambers and so he’s heard about Mlnarik through the years. He said she’s very capable, and so he doesn’t look at Thursday’s game any different than if 21-4 Cyclones had a male coach.

“I’ve watched quite a bit …
