Girls basketball: Shepard wins Gatorade honor

Fremont junior Jessica Shepard was named Nebraska’s 2013-14 Gatorade Nebraska girls basketball player of the year Thursday. The honor is awarded annually by Gatorade Company and USA Today to the state’s top player.

A two-time winner of the award, Shepard is the first from Fremont High School. She also earned the honor while playing at Lincoln Southeast as a sophomore.

Shepard, a Husker recruit, averaged 30.4 points, 15.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists for the Tigers (22-4) this season, compiling a Class A-record 780 points. She scored 23 and grabbed 13 rebounds in Fremont’s 70-65 loss in the first round of the Nebraska Class A high school girls basketball tournament last week.

Shepard maintained a 3.88 GPA and has also volunteered in various capacities.
