Day 1 at the Smith Softball Complex in Hastings was a historic one with three schools — Omaha Benson, Grand Island Northwest and York — all winning their first-ever games at the 20th annual event.
Two teams in each of the three classes also were eliminated Wednesday, none more surprisingly than Class A’s No. 1 team, Millard West. After losing a 5-4, 9-inning thriller to Benson in the Bunnies first-ever state tournament appearance, the Wildcats struggled mightily from the mound in dropping a 12-11 decision to Grand Island.
Today at 10 a.m. winners bracket games in Class A and B start the most hectic day of the tournament as each field of six remaining teams is halved to three for Friday’s championship round.

All I was doing was looking for NFL statistics to fill out my fantasy football lineup in a unique way a high school pal and I match wits on fall Sunday’s. Going to the cbssports.com site, I saw another link that I just had to click first.
Bowl projections. Waking up on the fourth Sunday of September, before a single Big Ten Conference game has been played, to see that link was a pleasant surprise. When the page opened, of course the first game listed was BCS championship game – this week it’s Alabama vs. Florida State.
But I didn’t have to scroll down very far to find Nebraska’s projected game. A return trip to Pasadena to represent the Big Ten as conference champions playing …

Nebraska football recruit Johnny Stanton celebrated his birthday Friday with more than 1,000 of his closest friends – many of them wearing Husker hats, shirts and/or jerseys – by leading Santa Margarita High School to a 55-0 victory over Trabuco Hills.
More than 100 Husker faithful showed up at Mission Viejo High School to watch a dazzling performance by the quarterback who could be leading their team into battle against opponents like Fresno State, Tennessee, Miami (Fla.) and Wyoming in the coming seasons.
Stanton led the Eagles to the their third win of the season by completing 16 of 20 passes for 302 yards and three touchdowns while also carrying the ball five times for 89 yards and another pair of TDs.
Time and again …

Later this evening I’m traveling to Mission Viejo High School to watch Nebraska quarterback commit Johnny Stanton lead the Santa Margarita Eagles against neighborhood rival Trabuco Hills.
This will be Santa Margarita’s third game of the season. The Eagles already own victories over Brophy College Prep of Arizona (27-14) and Long Beach Jordan (35-6).
Santa Margarita is ranked No. 5 nationally by USA Today after the first two weeks of the season. Later this evening I’ll update you on how the QB some have nicknamed Johnny Tebow did against Trabuco Hills.…

Good morning from sunny Pasadena, where preparations are underway for a big football game but no plans for a parade.
Since arriving on Wednesday, I’ve noticed a steady increase in the number of Nebraska fans in various parts of the greater Los Angeles area.
At the Thursday taping of “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” at least 30 Husker faithful made it into the show and one woman from Omaha had her picture taken with Leno when he came out to chat with the crowd before the show.
Those staying in Beverly Hills early Friday morning were participants in a uniquely California event — a 3.5 earthquake. According to the Los Angeles Times, it was felt over a wide area of Southern California, including downtown …

The 20th season of sanctioned high school softball is set to begin on Aug. 16. Plenty of progress has been made with the sport that began with a single class and now has 108 teams, and even more schools thanks to co-op arrangements in all three classes.
Class A has 28 teams, while Class B and Class C both have 40 schools for a total of 108 squads all with one aim — a berth in the Oct. 10-12 state tournaments in Hastings.
Players or former coaches — please, just folks from those two groups — who have memories about those early seasons they’d like to share, send them to me. We can post a few here and maybe a story can be developed closer …

Last week, it was for Olympic swimming prelims. Those were over Friday morning. This morning a lot of high school athletes had their alarms set for ‘before the sun comes up’ because it’s the first day of practice for many fall sports in the 2012-13 school year.
Softball, boys tennis and girls golf and tennis teams all begin practicing today — one softball team is set to go at 6:15 a.m. Sure hope they’re using glow-in-the-dark balls.
The first softball, tennis and golf events are set for Aug. 16. Could be a sign that rain is on the way as well. At least one weekend softball tournament each season seems to get cancelled because of rain. No one will complain after this summer.
Like they …

On the final day of prelim swims at the 2012 London Olympics, the fields for three of Saturday’s four finals were set and there was competition from all over the globe for the 16 coveted spots in Friday night’s women’s 50 freestyle semifinals.
Connor Jaeger was seventh in the prelims of the men’s 1,500 free (14:57.56) to earn a spot in the finals with the likes of China’s Sun Yang — who already has won gold in the 400 free and silver in the 200 free in London — Oussama Mellouli of Tunisia, Ryan Cochrane of Canada, Park Tae-Hwan of South Korea and, yes, a guy from London named Fogg — Daniel Fogg. The first man out of the finals — Andrew Gemmell of the …

Thursday night’s schedule in London might be the most memorable yet with a 200 IM duel between Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte about 20 minutes after Lochte defends his Olympic title in the 200 backstroke final.
There also will be some exciting semifinals in three events after morning prelims swims put all six of the U.S. contestants into the next round.
Leading the way was a 1-2 finish by Missy Franklin and Elizabeth Beisel in the 200 backstroke. They were the only two contestants under 2:08 as Franklin touched in 2:07.54 and Beisel in 2:07.82. Franklin also will compete Thursday in the final of the 100 free.
Michael Phelps beat Milorad Cavic in their prelim heat of the 100 butterfly and qualified second in 51.72. …
