Track and field: UNO’s Spenner named Summit athlete of the week

UNO senior Sami Spenner was named the Summit League track and field athlete of the week for the second consecutive week, the conference announced Tuesday.

A three-time winner of the athlete of the week award, Spenner broke three school records during heptathlon competition at the Mt. SAC Relays last week.

The Columbus, Neb., native broke school records in the 100-meter hurdles (14.00), 200-meter run (23.54) and heptathlon (6,003 points). Spenner also set personal bests in the high jump (5 feet, 7-3/4 inches) and shot put (39 feet, 4 inches).…

Scouting UNO: Freshman Lizzie Noble was named Summit League player of the week, the first conference award for the Bennington native. She hit .529 (9 of 17) with two home runs, one triple, one double, 13 RBIs and five runs scored as the Mavs went 4-0 last week. Noble entered the week with a .239 batting average and was in a 2-for-26 slump in her previous 10 games before raising her average to .284. Tuesday marks the start of a six-game home stretch, the last of the season for UNO. The Mavericks continue to lead the league in homers with 43. Amber Lutmer has 14, Campbell Ditto 10 and Allie Mathewson eight.

Softball: Mavs look to stay hot against struggling Jackrabbits

UNO will have a chance to build on its two-game winning streak when it travels to South Dakota State. The teams play a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday with a single game at noon Saturday.

SDSU has struggled to a 7-26 record, 2-10 in the Summit League. Two Nebraskans are in the starting lineup. Catcher KayCee Miller of Papillion-La Vista is hitting .294. Lincoln North Star outfielder Emily Weber is hitting .209.

UNO’s Spenner, Miller earn weekly Summit League honors

UNO track athlete Sami Spenner and women’s tennis player Hylan Miller received Summit League player of the week honors, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Spenner was named the league’s outdoor track and field athlete of the week after breaking her own school record in the triple jump Saturday. The senior finished second with a wind-legal jump of 41 feet, 10-½ inches, topping her old record by more than a foot.

The award is Spenner’s second outdoor track and field athlete of the week honor of her career and her first this season.

Miller, a freshman on the Mav tennis team, won all three of her singles and doubles matches during the week of April 8 to 14. Miller’s weekly honor was the first of the …

UNO’s doubleheader with North Dakota State canceled

The UNO baseball team’s Sunday doubleheader at North Dakota State has been canceled due to cold weather conditions in Fargo, it was announced Sunday afternoon.

The two games were originally scheduled as non-conference contests. In league play on Saturday, Omaha swept a doubleheader from the Bison with two shutouts, 2-0 in 10 innings and 10-0 in seven innings.

The Mavericks are 16-12 (5-3 Summit League) on the season and return to action on Wednesday against Nebraska at Haymarket Park at 6:35 p.m.…
