UNO soccer coach Jason Mims will be spending lots of time this week at the boys state tournament.
Mims said he’s always looking for players, but he also just enjoys the atmosphere at Creighton’s Morrison Stadium. There’s extra intensity when if you lose, you go home, he said.
“It’s nice to see the competitive environment like that,” he said. “It’s a little bit different from the regular season.”
Mims said recruiting has gone well this season. He already had five players enroll in January.
A list of recruits will be released later this week.…

Packed schedules and long road trips are part of the UNO women’s golf team’s first year in Division I.
The University of Nebraska at Omaha ended the spring season with six tournaments in four weeks.
“The season was really packed in,” said sophomore Brooke Thilges. “It was a very tough schedule. It sure kept me busy.”
The team’s youth was an additional hurdle. UNO had one senior returning, opening a chance for younger players to gain experience.
“We had younger players have career rounds and high rounds,” Thilges said. “We had a very young team and inconsistency hurt us at times.
“We struggled a little compared to the last couple years, but with the transition year, we’re trying to figure out new courses and new …

The success of UNO’s Kelsie Olson on and off the court makes her a perfect example of a true student-athlete.
The senior tennis captain has been a contributor on the University of Nebraska at Omaha team in all four years of her career, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.
“You have to remember you are a student first when you get to college,” Olson said. “If you have to take a day off of practice to catch up on studies the coach is usually understanding.”
Olson attributes a lot of her success to her time management and organizational skills. It is important to her to stay organized so she won’t forget about an assignment or exam.
Playing tennis has had advantages and disadvantages for Olson as …

In her first year competing for the UNO track team, Amanda Vorthmann has already set two school records, along with starting a culinary business.
Vorthmann broke the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s 3,000-meter indoor record Feb. 17 and the 3,000-meter steeplechase mark March 24 — her first time participating in the event this year.
The 3,000 steeplechase consists of five solid barriers to jump over, with the fifth barrier landing the runner in water.
“The steeplechase is my baby,” Vorthmann said. “Being a farm girl, it reminds me of running around on my farm, jumping over all different obstacles.”
Vorthmann, a redshirt junior, went to Iowa Central Community College for two years to get into culinary arts.
“Going through the juco experience was awesome for …

The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s No. 2 doubles team, junior Peter Greteman and freshman Connor Larson, know teamwork is vital to success.
“You have to be used to playing with someone to know what their strengths and weaknesses are,” Greteman said. “We work together on a lot of drills at practice to get us used to each other.”
Said Larson: “It’s important to know how the other person plays so that you know what you can do to play off the person.”
The two Mavericks are at different points in their doubles career. Larson is playing for the first time after being solely a singles player in high school. Greteman is learning to play with the sixth doubles partner of his career.
“Some people …
