B1G Media Days: Notes and quotes from Thursday’s roundtables

Coach Bo Pelini, Taylor Martinez, Quincy Enunwa and Ciante Evans all shared plenty of noteworthy insight and detail during two hours of media interviews Thursday.

If you haven’t checked out Sam McKewon’s two blog-style recaps from the roundtable session, check them out HERE and HERE.

Below are a few more comments from Thursday (Disclaimer: some are useful; others are just plain silly)…

>> Redshirt freshman Jared Afalava appears to be the early favorite to start at Nebraska’s strongside (BUCK) linebacker spot. Freshmen Courtney Love and Josh Banderas will compete for reps there, too. Pelini thinks redshirt freshman Michael Rose has the physical makeup to play that spot as well, though he’ll start camp at middle linebacker. It should be noted that Pelini’s pretty comfortable …

Stanton redshirt a possibility; Enunwa’s size offers options

A couple of extra tidbits from Big Ten media days:

Redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong is the No. 2 quarterback right now, Pelini said, with senior walk-on Ron Kellogg III close behind. If Armstrong holds on to the backup spot, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said, it would “make sense” for 2013 quarterback signee Johnny Stanton to redshirt this year.

Still, Pelini expects to be impressed by Stanton, who chose NU over Oregon and Wisconsin.

“He’s a really smart kid,” Pelini said. “Very heady. I think he ‘gets’ football. He’ll be interesting to watch develop early on. He’s going to be a good football player.”

Stanton’s fully recovered from a torn ACL in his knee, said Pelini, who added he’d like to get more playing time for …

B1G Media Days: Assistant captains, Oregon/Nebraska and Bo’s Valentine message

CHICAGO — Good two-hour media session here at the Hilton, where the roundtables were shoved into two different foyers to make for a hothouse-type experience. Leaders Division on one level, Legends on another. Nebraska coach Bo Pelini had 7-10 reporters around him at all times, and talked expansively about both sides of the ball. Here’s quick hits:

>> The Huskers have more than captains. They have assistant captains for each position group. Pelini couldn’t remember many of them, but nickel (and captain) Ciante Evans did. They are:

Tommy Armstrong (QBs)
Ameer Abdullah (RBs)
Kenny Bell (WRs)
Jeremiah Sirles (OL)
Jason Ankrah (DL)
Trevor Roach (LBs)
Josh Mitchell (CBs)
Corey Cooper (S)
Imani Cross (incoming recruits)

Why the new leadership structure? Pelini stuck to his “right …

B1G Media Days: Bo, Urban, Boss Jim, Wallpaper Kirk and more Day 1 stuff

A quick day of B1G stuff! Here’s what I learned:

>> When Nebraska coach Bo Pelini gets questioned about some perceived weakness of his team – its lack of athleticism last year on defense, its lack of experience on defense this year – he tends to double down on his core beliefs. Where you might peek outside to see if the bombs stopped, he goes down another level in his coaching bunker. There are advantages to that – primarily continuity. Nothing loses faster than a program or coach constantly looking for a new vision. Pelini has certitude. He actually wears it confidently and casually. In this way, he’s an analogue to Penn State’s Bill O’Brien, a similarly-certain innovator who practically shrugs at handing over his …

B1G Media Days: Tidbits from Nebraska players

Quarterback Taylor Martinez, receiver Quincy Enunwa and cornerback Ciante Evans chatted about all sorts of different topics Wednesday.

We’ve compiled a few highlights here.

>> Martinez said he’s going out of his way to mentor redshirt freshman Tommy Armstrong. The current lesson: “Just to make sure he knows what he’s up for.” There are lots of responsibilities associated with being the starting QB at Nebraska. Martinez said he’s trying to prepare Armstrong for that as best he can. Because Armstrong has the talent. “He’s really good,” Martinez said. “He should have a great career at Nebraska.”

>> Martinez said he’s thrilled to have his brother, Drake, on campus now. They’ve never played for the same team before. Taylor said Drake has “had a lot of fun” …

B1G Media Days: Jim Delany goes deep

CHICAGO — Jim Delany rarely takes the predicted route when he addresses the state of the Big Ten, the NCAA and college football. So reporters expecting Delany to declare the NCAA dead and the old system useless were bound to disappointed, and during the course of a nearly-30-minute opening statement at the Hilton Chicago on Wednesday, they had to have been.

Delany didn’t much want to talk about the NCAA. He wanted to offer ideas to reinforce the notion of the student-athlete.

Here are the ideas, in order:

1. An “explicit” and lifetime commitment to athletes for the opportunity to return to school at any time in their lives and graduate.

2. More realistic time demands for athletes. Delany said he asked football coaches Wednesday …

B1G Media Days: All eyes on Urban

CHICAGO — Ohio State coach Urban Meyer took the podium in the Hilton Chicago ballroom and tried, in his opening statement, to “focus on the positives created by tremendous momentum” of the Buckeyes’ 12-0 season and top-rated recruiting class.

But the collected reporters for Big Ten media days had different ideas — and mostly tough questions — surrounding recent disciplinary problems in Meyer’s OSU program and how he handled alleged murderer Aaron Hernandez when the NFL star played for Meyer at Florida.

Meyer is Meyer. So he handled it by leaning against the podium, dropping his voice perhaps an octave lower, and occasionally glancing downward, perhaps at notes he’d put together for the event. As a primer: Four Buckeyes — including running back Carlos Hyde …
