Practice report: NU using team effort to replace Steinkuhler

Nebraska’s preparing for Saturday’s rematch against Wisconsin, a game the Huskers will have to play without their most disruptive defensive tackle.

Senior Baker Steinkuhler, a game-changer in NU’s 30-27 win over the Badgers in September, is out for the Big Ten title game. This much we knew.

How do the Huskers plan to replace him? Well, that question may not be answered until Saturday, but defensive coordinator John Papuchis said Tuesday that it won’t be just one player.

“That’s why we practice the way we practice,” Papuchis said. “All of our guys get a lot of reps. When their opportunity comes, they need to be ready.”

Sophomore Chase Rome finished the Iowa game in Steinkuhler’s place and played well, according to Papuchis. But junior Thad …

Big Red Breakfast: Forget Iowa’s record, Marrow expects ‘competitive’ game

Iowa’s lost five straight contests and has struggled to keep games close against some of the Big Ten’s better teams. But the Hawkeyes will give Nebraska their best effort Friday.

That’s what NU graduate assistant Vince Marrow expects anyway.

A typical rivalry matchup. Throw the records out the window, Marrow told a crowd of about 250 Husker fans at the Big Red Breakfast. Forget that the Hawkeyes have been outscored by an average of 20 points in their three conference games against teams with winning league records.

“They’re going to be amped to play,” Marrow said. “It’s going to be a very difficult road game. It’s going to be very competitive.”

Why? Marrow’s spent most of his time this week studying the Iowa defense. Here’s …

Practice report: Nebraska without injured FB Marrow

A member of the Huskers’ fullback trio may not play at Michigan State Saturday.

Junior Mike Marrow (knee), injured during the win over Michigan, hasn’t practiced this week and could miss Saturday’s game, according to running backs coach Ron Brown. The exact severity of the injury is unknown, but Brown doesn’t think Marrow’s season is in jeopardy.

If Marrow is out Saturday, it would mean more snaps for junior C.J. Zimmerer and true freshman Andy Janovich. All three have split reps this season.

“I think we’ve come a long way so far this season at the fullback spot,” Brown said. “We were very green and very raw when we started off the season. They’re starting to find their way around pretty well now.”

Checking in with Caputo

Lots to talk about with a now-former Husker — center Mike Caputo, who was honored at the Outland Trophy banquet Thursday night.

Caputo wasn’t the only one recognized at the event. Terrence Moore and Jared Crick were there. Lavonte David wasn’t, but he still got a tribute video. Alabama’s Barrett Jones — the highly acclaimed offensive tackle — was the obvious headliner. (I’ll put a few more notes in another blog post shortly).

But Caputo, the one-time walk-on, hasn’t participated in a media interview since a December arrest nearly spoiled the end to a storybook career. He talked Thursday.

>> Caputo admitted he felt a little helpless after news broke of the Dec. 11 incident, when Lincoln police arrested him on suspicion of driving under …

Some leftover O-line nuggets

I spent Monday talking with Nebraska players and coaches about six weeks worth of development on the offensive line. Filled my notebook. So not every tidbit could make it into Tuesday’s edition of The World-Herald.

My beat column can be found right here — the point of the piece is that multiple factors appear to have led to a sudden transformation up front.

Will it last? That remains to be seen. But it’s obvious that the NU offensive line went from a weakness to a strength in a little over a month. The Huskers had lots of reasons for why that happened. … Feel free to drop a comment with your own take below. I’d love to hear it!

In the meantime, I’ll just highlight …

Nebraska-Wisconsin: Jones, Rodriguez to start

Andrew Rodriguez and Marcel Jones will both be back with the starting offensive line for Nebraska on Saturday night — after varying amounts of time away.

For Rodriguez at left guard, it will be his first start since the Fresno State game on Sept. 10. The sophomore will replace Seung Hoon Choi.

For Jones at right tackle, it will be his first start since the Kansas State game late in the 2009 season. The senior will replace Tyler Moore.

NU assistant coach Barney Cotton confirmed those changes Friday during the Big Red Breakfast at the Embassy Suites at the La Vista Conference Center.

Cotton, however, said both Choi and Moore will play significant amounts as Nebraska sticks with an eight-man rotation on its offensive line.…

T-Beck and T-Magic mind meld

Some nuggets from Nebraska offensive coordinator Tim Beck’s five-minute presser after Tuesday’s practice:

>> Beck will call plays from the press box. Joining him there will be offensive line coach Barney Cotton, who had previously spent his last few seasons on the field.

“I think it’s a change for him,” Beck said.

Presumably that puts the offensive line coach, John Garrison, on the field. Wide receivers coach Rich Fisher and running backs coach Ron Brown will be down on the field, as well.

>> The new OC chuckled a little bit at quarterback Taylor Martinez’s comment Monday that, in NU’s offense, “pretty much every decision is based on me.”

“He likes to think he has all the decisions,” Beck said, smiling. “We work together. Taylor …
