No surprise here. The Corona, Calif., rocket shook off inconsistent performances in 2010 and 2011 to become a more complete quarterback in 2012. He was as dangerous as he’s ever been as a runner — 1,019 yards and 10 touchdowns — and more efficient and prolific as a passer, completing 62 percent of his throws for 2,871 yards and 23 touchdowns.

His big plays left tread marks on some of the Big Ten’s best defenses, including …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 2 Ameer Abdullah

Three running backs arrived as true freshmen in 2011. Two were top 100, four-star recruits. The third was Abdullah. The top 100 recruits left town — in big part because Abdullah beat them out.

In relief of an injured Rex Burkhead last season, Abdullah rushed for 1,137 yards and eight touchdowns. He especially found his stride on toss plays, when he could graduate from one level of the defense to another by weaving …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 3 Kenny Bell

Kenny Bell | 6-foot-1 | 185 pounds | Jr. | Wide receiver

He emerged in 2011 as a dangerous deep threat whose speed could burn any Big Ten defensive back. He backed it up in 2012 with one of the best receiving seasons in Husker history — 50 catches, 863 yards and eight touchdowns. Despite defenses marking his fly-route speed with double coverage, he made even more big plays because he’d developed a knack for running the middle post and absorbing big blows to make …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 4 Ciante Evans

Within the Nebraska defense, the nickel position often carries an elevated status. Head coach Bo Pelini won’t trust just any player with the full range of responsibilities that come with the position. The guy has to be able to cover the slot receiver and even occasionally tight ends. He has to be ready to make quick tackles on the edge when linebackers bounce ballcarriers to the corner. He has to sit in the …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 5 Spencer Long

From now until the start of fall camp, The World-Herald will be counting down the top 50 players you need to know heading into the 2013 football season.

The better an offensive line tends to be, the less you tend to notice it.

For decades, Nebraska fans accurately presumed that the Huskers’ offensive line would be a strength, the starters would have earned the right to start and all-conference and All-America awards were in the offing. For the past decade, however, the Huskers’ line has been average-to-decent, and it seems to attract attention for being precisely that.

Long, the former walk-on from …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 6 Quincy Enunwa

From now until the start of fall camp, The World-Herald will be counting down the top 50 players you need to know heading into the 2013 football season.

Quincy Enunwa | 6-foot-2 | 225 pounds | Sr. | Wide receiver

He’s maybe the best lead-by-example player in Nebraska’s program, and a pretty talented on-field producer, too.

Enunwa’s a quiet guy by nature, maybe because he’s never needed to say much. His play speaks for itself — whether he’s bullishly decleating a defender with a block or dragging would-be tacklers a dozen yards downfield after a catch.

He was most effective in the deep middle last year, separating from cornerbacks by using his rare …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 7 Jamal Turner

From now until the start of fall camp, The World-Herald will be counting down the top 50 players you need to know heading into the 2013 football season.

Jamal Turner | 6-foot-1 | 185 pounds | Jr. | Wide receiver

Ask Turner about his growth as a player and person in the past two years and he’ll laugh. Humor’s about the only way he makes sense of a maturation so significant. There’s still room for more progress, but Turner’s embracing the challenge.

The turning point, arguably, occurred last offseason, when he acknowledged his flaws and buddied up with veterans for tutelage. Confidence ballooned from there, and was exposed fully when he caught the …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 8 Jason Ankrah

From now until the start of fall camp, The World-Herald will be counting down the top 50 players you need to know heading into the 2013 football season.

Jason Ankrah | 6-foot-4 | 265 pounds | Sr. | Defensive end

It’s the last chance for Ankrah. And boy, do the Huskers need a breakout year from their veteran defensive end.

The dude who’s looked the part physically for three years now has played in 36 career games, starting 18. Ankrah’s overflowing with upside — but he’s never quite found the balance between aggression and hesitancy. Ankrah had the best spring of his career this offseason, said defensive coordinator John Papuchis.

But even in …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 9 Cole Pensick

From now until the start of fall camp, The World-Herald will be counting down the top 50 players you need to know heading into the 2013 football season.

Cole Pensick | 6-foot-2 | 275 pounds | Sr. | Center

He was technically a reserve guard until the final game of the 2012 season, but Pensick emerged as a vital member of Nebraska’s offensive line well before that. He was agile enough to maneuver out on the edge and clear space for ballcarriers, and that fit right into the design of the Huskers’ stretch running plays. They needed guards who could peel off the line and block second-level defenders.

Even though Pensick’s position will …

Husker Camp Countdown: No. 10 Zaire Anderson

From now until the start of fall camp, The World-Herald will be counting down the top 50 players you need to know heading into the 2013 football season.

Zaire Anderson | 5-foot-11 | 220 pounds | Jr. | Linebacker

Hard to imagine that the brief glimpse coaches and teammates had of Anderson’s on-field ability last year was hampered by an previously torn ACL. He didn’t show many signs of a significant injury, so it makes one wonder what kind of potential Anderson has when fully healthy.

He’s expected to be on the field quite often for Nebraska this fall, projected as the starter at weakside linebacker. Match his fearlessness in the trenches — …
