Recruiting: Dimarya Mixon not heading to Nebraska

Former Nebraska 2013 recruit Dimarya Mixon — who had failed to qualify for enrollment this fall — asked for and was granted his release from NU, according to 247Sports. He’ll take five new official visits in hopes of picking a school and enrolling there in January. That school won’t be Nebraska.

“I love Nebraska and the fans and the coaches but I’ve got to move on from that situation and do what’s best for me,” the 6-foot-4, 255-pound Mixon told 247Sports. “My goal is to get my visits done as early as possible and get this wrapped up again soon.”

Mixon listed Boise State, Auburn, Washington State, Arkansas and Oregon as potential targets.

Practice report: Camp ends, LB Newby cleared, scholarships awarded

The next time the Huskers step on to the practice field it officially will be game week. Still lots to sort out until then, though.

Coach Bo Pelini chatted Saturday about a few position battles (kicker, backup quarterback, special teams units) but insisted once again that the coaching staff will allow those — and plenty other — competitions to extend into the season. Pelini said they haven’t talked about redshirting plans for true freshmen yet, either.

“I liked our camp,” he said. “I thought we got a lot done, a lot accomplished. Now it’s time to put it to the test.”

Quick notes from the final day of preseason camp are below …

Practice report: Nebraska completes Day Two of camp

It was just coach Bo Pelini who chatted with reporters about Tuesday’s practice, the second of training camp for Nebraska’s football team. But he covered lots of topics.

Pelini said he’s been pleased with the team’s level of enthusiasm and execution two days in. It’s helmets-only, but the players are “hungry” and working with a “business-like” mentality, Pelini said. Of course, there’s lots to do still.

A few notes are below…

>> Pelini offered a few updates on three true freshman scholarship guys who didn’t practice Tuesday. Maliek Collins missed Tuesday because of a personal issue, but he’ll return Wednesday. Dimarya Mixon and Marcus Newby are “still working through some eligibility things,” Pelini said. And there’s no timetable yet on any change to their status, …

Recruiting: Dimarya Mixon flips from Mizzou to Nebraska

Nebraska doesn’t play old Big Eight foe Missouri in football these days — but it won two key recruiting battles in the last week, both for defensive linemen.

First, Husker commit Maliek Collins rebuffed a late offer to visit Mizzou. Then, Tiger commit and West Mesquite (Texas) defensive end Dimarya Mixon did choose to visit NU. On Saturday, he flipped his commit to the Huskers. He confirmed the news on his Twitter account.

“When I finished lunch with the coaches [Saturday], that’s when I knew,” Mixon told Fox Sports Next. “I felt it was the right place for me. It was just the way they made me feel, like family. And they were not pressuring me to change my decision. On top of being …
