Big Fat, Recruiting Update, Aug. 29

Before the update, a quick thought on Nebraska quarterback commit Johnny Stanton (Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic), who started his senior year on ESPN2.

Santa Margarita beat Phoenix Brophy Prep 27-14. The game wasn’t that close — Santa Margarita was so much bigger than Brophy up front that “mismatch” is the only way to describe it — and Stanton threw for 208 yards, rushed for 99 and accounted for four touchdowns. He threw two interceptions, too.

Santa Margarita’s offense is a puzzler. Stanton works under center in a four-receiver, one-back set that looks a lot like old the run-and-shoot offenses you saw in college and the NFL 20-25 years ago. A lot of quick-hit sweeps and tosses, a handful of spare-looking option plays, and a lot …

Recruiting: Johnny Be Elite

Nebraska’s recruiting class may or may not get much of a statistical bump from ESPN’s Elite 11 quarterback camp.

But the perception of the Huskers program did, for 2013 quarterback commit Johnny Stanton made the final Elite 11 list after nearly a week of competition.

A 6-foot-2, 210-pounder from Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.), Stanton battled 24 other quarterbacks for 11 finalist spots. On Friday and Saturday, he was the camp’s No. 1 quarterback, but the Elite 11 staff named South Florida commit Asiantii Woolard the MVP.

A four-star prospect according to 247Sports, Stanton picked NU over Oregon and Wisconsin July 9. He took two unofficial visits to campus — including one in which he threw for offensive coordinator Tim Beck and impressed enough to earn …

Recruiting: Stanton starring so far at Elite 11 camp

You’ll recall Husker Illustrated’s story on Johnny Stanton heading to the star-studded Elite 11 camp in California this week.

As of Friday, the four-star talent is No. 1 among all quarterbacks at the camp. Former Husker targets Malik Zaire (No. 3) and Devante Kincade (No. 5) are also in the top five.

The event runs through Sunday.…

Recruiting: Analyzing new priorities for Nebraska

Finding a quarterback recruit for 2013 was, by far, the Huskers’ top objective this summer, so securing a commitment from Johnny Stanton shouldn’t be understated. It’s a big victory for the NU coaching staff.

Stanton’s the nation’s 11th-best dual-threat QB, according to 247Sports. And he’ll be one of 25 high school signal callers participating in the final Elite 11 quarterback camp later this month.

More on Stanton is here. Feel free to analyze his footwork and throwing mechanics in this Elite 11 regional camp video. For what it’s worth, Stanton said he plans to help Nebraska recruit California talent from this point forward (Our recruiting partner, Huskers Illustrated, has the story).

Stanton’s the most important 2013 prospect in NU’s class so far. …

Recruiting: QB Stanton pledges to Nebraska

Nebraska finally has a quarterback for its 2013 recruiting class. Johnny Stanton, out of Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., informed the NU staff of his nonbinding commitment Sunday night.

The news went public Monday. Stanton, who visited Lincoln twice this summer, talked to Huskers Illustrated, a World-Herald recruiting partner, about his decision.

“On the second visit I was able to meet the players and my family was able to see the campus,” he told Huskers Illustrated. “I think they were sold on it too. That really sealed the deal a little bit. I was able to talk to the coaches. Having a relationship with them really helped my decision.”

Certainly, Stanton’s a big addition for NU, which lacks depth at the quarterback spot behind junior Taylor …

Recruiting: NU QB target staying mum

Quarterback Johnny Stanton said he’s done taking visits. The four-star signal-caller from Rancho Santa Margarita (Calif.) appears ready to make a decision between Nebraska, Wisconsin, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA and Utah. Or is he?

“Maybe, I don’t know,” he told Huskers Illustrated.

NU “definitely” remains an option after a second unofficial visit in late June. But, as Stanton heads to the ESPN/Nike Elite 11 camp, he still hasn’t said yes to anywhere. And remember: A really good showing at Elite 11 can change the composition of one’s offers. (Although Oregon, Wisconsin and Nebraska are pretty good offers already.)

Friday, Husker QB target Devante Kincade committed to Ole Miss over NU, Mississippi State and Kansas State, and some others. And Damion Hobbs committed to Arkansas …

Recruiting: Johnny Stanton sees Nebraska again

Nebraska quarterback target Johnny Stanton took trip No. 2 to Lincoln this week. The four-star signal-caller from Santa Margarita, Calif made no commitment to NU — and said the coaches didn’t pressure him to, either.

“They are letting me go off of my own time line,” the 6-foot-2, 210-pounder told Huskers Illustrated. ”They let me know what the situation is and there are still other quarterbacks they are recruiting. I do appreciate that they aren’t pressuring me to make a commitment.”

Stanton toured the campus, liked the Student Life Center and had a 25-minute chat with Nebraska coach Bo Pelini.

“We talked about everything,” Stanton said. “He talked about how I could fit in with the team. We talked about the other guys that are coming in with 11 commits right now …

Recruiting: QB Stanton wants a second look at NU

When he returns from his European vacation, 2013 quarterback target Johnny Stanton will take a second unofficial visit to Nebraska — this time with his family. Stanton’s first visit to NU for the Huskers’ final day of their Elite Quarterback academy, when he impressed offensive coordinator Tim Beck enough to earn an offer.

“I want to walk the campus,” Stanton told Huskers Illustrated. ”I wasn’t able to do so last time and I want to meet some of the players.”

A four-star athlete who is one of the finalists in ESPN/Nike’s Elite 11 competition, Stanton has offers from Oregon, Washington, Utah and Oregon State, too. He’s a fast-riser who’s bound to get a long look from UCLA, who may be Nebraska’s top competition here.

But the Huskers are clearly in …

Recruiting: Full Big Red Weekend wrap

If the recruit fruit of Nebraska’s first Big Red Weekend is limited to a long snapper (Gabe Miller) and one of the best safety prospects in the country (Nathan Gerry, believe it), it was success enough.

But NU hosted almost 20 prospects to a night of barbecue, video games and even a home run contest. It expects — and will likely get — a bigger return on its investment in coming months.

Two targets — Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst guard Zach Hannon and Port Allen, La., linebacker Darian Claiborne — nearly committed during the visit, but held off. Two others — Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard linebacker Marcus Newby and Los Angeles Chaminade running back Terrell Newby — have a lot more …

Recruiting: A new QB emerging on NU’s board?

A 24-hour trip Tuesday to Nebraska’s quarterback camp could put four-star signal-caller Johnny Stanton in line for a scholarship offer later this year.

A 6-foot-2, 215-pounder from Santa Margarita (Calif.) Catholic threw an hour’s worth of passes for NU offensive coordinator Tim Beck, then took the full tour around the North Stadium offices and Memorial Stadium.

“They told me that they really like me and that I’m in a pool with a few other quarterbacks,” he told Huskers Illustrated. “They want to get to know the players a little bit more and they want to offer one of us quarterbacks soon. I have my fingers crossed that I’ll get that call.

“They told me that me coming out here for even one day was …
