Spring football: Practice quick hits, March 6

Coach Bo Pelini said leaders will emerge on this defense. He has no doubt about that. But he made a point Wednesday to remind some of the new example-setters that they’re be relied on (now!) to take over the unit.

There are no games to look forward to during spring ball. Only the next practice. And with a young group defensively (eight starters are gone) mistakes are common and adversity is inevitable.

Here’s Pelini’s message: “When it gets difficult, that’s where the leadership’s got to step up. That’s where they’ve got to show the enthusiasm, bring the young guys along — when a guy makes a mistake and somebody’s frustrated, somebody’s got to help him through that. That’s all part of the process.”

And it’s …

Practice Report: More NU walk-ons get scholarships (Aug. 18)

Quick hits from Saturday’s scrimmage:

>> Nebraska coach Bo Pelini awarded junior Spencer Long and seniors Seung Hoon Choi, Justin Jackson, Justin Blatchford and Brett Maher scholarships for the upcoming season. Walk-ons Jase Dean, Graham Stoddard and Kenny Anderson will be put on scholarship during the second semester. Long and Maher were put on scholarship earlier this summer.

Pelini announced the new scholarship players at a midfield huddle after Saturday’s scrimmage.

“Words can’t describe,” Jackson said. “It chokes me up talking about it now. Been a long time. A lot of work. Coach Bo takes care of us. Great feeling. I was always hoping. We got a lot of guys on our team that bust their butt and work really hard. To hear my name …

Practice Report: Saturday scrimmage

Quick hits from the rest of Bo Pelini’s comments after practice — the ones that didn’t deal with sophomore left tackle Tyler Moore, that is. You can find those here.

>> Coach Bo Pelini said Nebraska ran more than 100 plays in its scrimmage Saturday.

“The tempo was really good offensively,” he said. “We have a lot in. We have a lot in defensively. Obviously, it’s a team game. A breakdown here, a breakdown there. But, overall, I thought it was pretty good execution.”

>> Pelini said senior defensive end Joe Carter made “significant progress” in the last three practices and is “light-years ahead of where he was a year ago, with another galaxy to go.”

“But he’s really worked at it,” Pelini said. …

Recruiting: CB transfer Rose ready to start over at Nebraska

Former Auburn cornerback Jonathan Rose said he wanted a “real fresh start,” prompting a decision to leave the Tigers’ program and ultimately ending up at Nebraska.

Rose declined to share specific details regarding his departure from Auburn, but said he parted ways with the school at the beginning of the month and started searching for a new place to play soon after.

Now, he’s signed a letter of intent and he plans to be on Nebraska’s campus by early next week.

Why NU?

“I felt like it was a good move for me and my future,” Rose said.

Rose never took a visit to Lincoln, but he used the Internet to research the program and the school’s academic amenities. Liked what he saw.

He also …

Red Rose

According to a Twitter picture from a Rivals.com analyst, former Auburn defensive back Jonathan Rose intends to transfer to Nebraska. He played as a true freshman for the Tigers before being dismissed from the program and choosing not to return. He has a prior relationship with new NU defensive backs coach Terry Joseph.

In 2011, the 6-foot-2, 185-pounder was ranked at the No. 88 overall player in the country by 247Sports, No. 112 by Rivals and No. 152 by Scout. He’ll have to sit out a year, but he’ll be eligible to play for the Huskers as a sophomore in 2013. He could be a corner or a safety.

Big fat recruiting update, Aug. 8

It could be a big day on the Nebraska roster front.

First, former Auburn cornerback Jonathan Rose is soon to make a decision on his new school, and chances are pretty good, his father Charles said, that Nebraska is that school. When we know, you will.

Second, Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst offensive guard Zach Hannon will announce his commitment for the 2013 recruiting class at 4 p.m. on Twitter. Hannon, who has taken several unofficial visits to NU, will choose between the Huskers, Arkansas and Missouri. Via text Tuesday night, the 6-foot-5, 300-pounder told The World-Herald he knows where’s he’s going. We’ll see if it’s NU.

If not, it’s a blow to the Huskers’ recruiting class. Nebraska’s sunk a lot of time into this prospect, …

Former Auburn DB looking at Nebraska

New Nebraska defensive backs coach Terry Joseph may help the Huskers land one of the nation’s top cornerbacks from 2011.

Jonathan Rose, who was dismissed from Auburn’s team July 25, has NU as one of his potential destinations, reports Huskers Illustrated. The 6-foot-2, 180-pounder considered Tennessee — Joseph’s last stop — out of Leeds (Ala.) High School in suburban Birmingham.

“Jonathan really liked Coach Joseph,” Leeds coach Keith Etheredge told HI. “Coach Joseph is a down-to-earth guy. He’s straight up and doesn’t sugarcoat things. I think that Jonathan respected that and had a good relationship with him.”

Rose picked Auburn because his father, Charles, played there from 1992-96. Jonathan Rose played as a freshman and, according to al.com, he led the Tigers in …
