Pelini on defensive scheme: ‘We’re not dialing back at all’

Coach Bo Pelini said he’s not changing the fundamental principles that make up his defensive system. No surprise there. But are subtle alterations coming?

Pelini, speaking on “Sports Nightly” on the Husker Sports Network Wednesday night, made a point to say that his scheme is “multiple” yet “simple,” indicating that no plans for a complete overhaul are needed.

But last season, he thought that too often his players “were trying to be so perfect” that it hindered their playmaking ability. Pelini characterized that approach as “one of the worst things we did” on the defensive side of the ball.

So, it’s teaching the system without overwhelming the young players or compromising their instinctual nature — that seems to be the NU coaching staff’s primary defensive objective …

Afalava, Alexander good to go

One of the best recruits from Nebraska’s 2012 recruiting class — Salt Lake City-area linebacker Jared Afalava — got the academic green light Thursday to enroll at NU.

“There was a lot of other issues in the last two months that needed to be worked out, but he buckled down,” Peck told HuskersIllustrated. ”He really had to do a lot of things to put himself in a position to get it done.”

Husker notes: DE Williams gone; Els to lead NU recruiting

Defensive end Josh Williams, a soon-to-be senior, is no longer with the Nebraska football program after a violation of team rules, coach Bo Pelini said Wednesday.

Williams played in all 13 games for the Huskers last year, starting two. The 6-foot-4, 260-pounder from Denton, Texas, finished the 2011 season with 15 total tackles and one stop behind the line of scrimmage. He also blocked a kick.

Other tidbits passed on by Pelini Wednesday are below…

>> Linebackers coach Ross Els will be the team’s recruiting coordinator (now that John Papuchis has been promoted to defensive coordinator). Why Els? Said Pelini: “Experience. Thought it was the right choice.” Els will also oversee the special teams.

>> The NU staff is considering moving running back Braylon Heard …

Recruiting: Huskers land 12th commitment

While you slept, Nebraska’s football team picked up an off-the-radar commit for its 2012 recruiting class.

LeRoy Alexander, a 6-foot-2, 190-pound athlete from Toledo (Ohio) Whitmer High School, confirmed via text message to Huskers Illustrated at 12:30 a.m. that he had become NU’s 12th commitment.

Alexander has no star rank or rating from 247 Sports – though he will shortly – and held an offer just from Toledo until Nebraska decided to offer. He spent most of his high school career at a different school and transferred to Whitmer – an Ohio state power – for his senior year. There, he and team were under a cloud of potential eligibility violations.

According to the Toledo Blade, the Ohio High School Athletic Association tried to …
