Practice report Aug. 27: Defense’s top unit taking shape

This could (and probably will) change by next week, but defensive coordinator John Papuchis provided a detailed update of the Huskers’ starting lineup after practice Tuesday.

We won’t waste time. Here’s the good stuff, courtesy of Papuchis…

>> Defensive end Jason Ankrah and defensive tackle Thad Randle are starters (you knew that). Redshirt freshman Avery Moss and sophomore Randy Gregory are still battling out for the other top D-end job. And if the game were today, Papuchis said, the fourth lineman would be redshirt freshman Vincent Valentine — who’s apparently better conditioned (what used to be his biggest obstacle).

>> Sophomore David Santos is settled in as the top middle linebacker in the nickel and dime formations. Junior Zaire Anderson, freshman Nathan Gerry and senior …

Recruiting: Full Big Red Weekend wrap

If the recruit fruit of Nebraska’s first Big Red Weekend is limited to a long snapper (Gabe Miller) and one of the best safety prospects in the country (Nathan Gerry, believe it), it was success enough.

But NU hosted almost 20 prospects to a night of barbecue, video games and even a home run contest. It expects — and will likely get — a bigger return on its investment in coming months.

Two targets — Kansas City (Mo.) Rockhurst guard Zach Hannon and Port Allen, La., linebacker Darian Claiborne — nearly committed during the visit, but held off. Two others — Gaithersburg (Md.) Quince Orchard linebacker Marcus Newby and Los Angeles Chaminade running back Terrell Newby — have a lot more …

He had offers from Arizona State, Iowa State and Minnesota, too. He finished 2011 with 37 catches for 647 yards and eight touchdowns on offense. On defense, he had 73 tackles and two sacks.

The Big Red Weekend hosted more than 20 recruits — for the …

Recruiting: Nebraska makes Devante Kincade’s short list

Several updates from our recruiting partner, Huskers Illustrated, which continues to do great work during a key time for evaluating and offering prospects.

Devante Kincade, 6-2/200, QB, 3 stars/88 rating, Dallas (Skyline)

One of the best QBs in the Metroplex has whittled his list to six teams. Nebraska made the cut. So did Kansas State, Mississippi, Mississippi State, Notre Dame and Oregon State. The whole gamut of offenses there, from KSU’s spread run to OSU’s pro-style attack.

“They are a great program and it’s somewhere I feel like I can come in and play quarterback there,” Kincade said of Nebraska. “I think I could come in and play early. They have the same offense I like and I know they are going to throw it around …
