Omaha Eight, May 5

The College World Series returns to TD Ameritrade Park on June 15. Each week until then, The World-Herald will take a look at eight teams capable of finishing their seasons in Omaha.

Florida State (40-7): The Seminoles had a 10-game winning streak snapped with an 8-5 loss to Maryland on Monday night but they continue to hold a commanding lead in the race for the Atlantic Coast Conference championship. Florida State’s magic number is two with weeks left in the regular season. The Seminoles won the opening games of the Maryland series to push their record to 12-0 in weekend series. What was impressive about their 10-3 and 9-2 wins was that they came against Maryland pitchers Jimmy Reed (1.83 ERA) and Michael Boyden (2.09 …

The College World Series returns to TD Ameritrade Park on June 15. Each week until then, The World-Herald will take a look at eight schools that have a chance to end their seasons in Omaha.

>> Florida State (36-7): The Seminoles began the season with modest expectations — they weren’t picked to win their division in the Atlantic Coast Conference and none of their players were considered All-America timbre, but Florida State heads into May ranked No. 1 in three of the four national polls, and is just one of two teams that has not lost a weekend series. The Seminoles swept a nonconference series from Rhode Island last week. First baseman Jayce Boyd, who ranks 12th nationally with a .407 average, and center fielder James …

The College World Series returns to TD Ameritrade Park on June 15.   Each week until then, The World-Herald will take a look at eight teams that have a chance to end their seasons in Omaha.

Florida State (33-7):   The Seminoles continue to run away with the Atlantic Coast Conference race, with a weekend sweep of Miami improving them to 19-2 in league play.   Florida State’s sweep of Miami was its first since 2002.   The Seminoles have their best record in league play since 1999, when they also started 19-2.   After winning the first two games against Miami by 11-2 and 6-1 scores, Florida State claimed its sweep on Sheman Johnson’s 10th-ining, walk-off single that produced an 8-7 win.   The single capped a …

Omaha Eight, April 16

The College World Series will return to Omaha’s TD Ameritrade Park on June 15. Each week until then, The World-Herald will take a look at eight teams that have a chance to finish their seasons in Omaha.

Florida State (29-7): The Seminoles are ranked No. 1 by Baseball America but two other polls have intrastate rival Florida in the top spot, for good reason. The Gators are 3-0 against Florida State, having posted a 6-3 win last week. The Seminoles bounced back to win two of three against Boston College, increasing their lead in the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Atlantic Division to five games over second-place North Carolina State.   Florida State, 16-2 in conference play, also owns a four-game lead on North Carolina and Miami for …

The Omaha Eight, May 30

The World-Herald’s Steven Pivovar has gazed into the future and has determined that the following eight teams will make it to Omaha for the first College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park.

Virginia: The Cavaliers have spent much of the season occupying the No. 1 spot in the polls, and the committee valued their body of work enough to give them the No. 1 overall seed. The committee did Virginia no favors in setting up a potential super-regional matchup with UCLA, last season’s national runner-up with two first-round draft picks at the front of the rotation.

Texas Christian: The biggest reason the Horned Frogs could be in line for a return trip to Omaha is that their big three — Matt Purke, Kyle Winkler and …
