One Rose Bowl spot has been solidified. Stanford hung on for a 27-24 win over UCLA Friday night, securing its first conference title since 1999.
As is tradition, The Cardinal (Pac-12 champs) will play the Big Ten’s best on Jan. 1. Nebraska and Wisconsin will slug it out Saturday — and the winner will have its hands full with a Stanford team that EVERYONE underrated three months ago.
Well, everyone except those in the Cardinal locker room. Stanford lost QB Andrew Luck, yet reached a BCS bowl game for the third-straight season. It finished the year with seven consecutive wins — including a 17-14 overtime victory at Oregon and two in a row over UCLA.
How’d this happen? Coach David Shaw, who seems like a …

Coach Bo Pelini said he’s not talked to his team about the possibility of playing in the Rose Bowl this season, even though Nebraska’s in a favorable position to earn a trip to Pasadena.
The Huskers are in first place in the Big Ten Legends Division — and if they hold on for the title, they’d play either Wisconsin or Indiana in the conference championship game for a Rose Bowl berth.
But that can’t be Nebraska’s focus, according to Pelini. No big-picture talk. Not with three regular season games left to play.

The Big Ten, Pac-12 and Rose Bowl announced a 12-year extension with ESPN to televise the game, which continues in its traditional 4 p.m. Central/2 p.m. Pacific time slot on Jan. 1.
“We’re excited that the Rose Bowl Game will continue to be featured on ESPN through 2026,” Big Ten boss Jim Delany said. “The Big Ten and Pac-12 have a tremendous history of exciting matchups on New Year’s Day in Pasadena that dates back more than a century. Big Ten, Rose Bowl a thorn in playoff plans? It’s down to four options for college football’s postseason plans after the 2013 season. And the Big Ten/Pac-12 has a scenario in the running that’s bizarre — but indicative of just how much those two leagues, plus the Rose Bowl, wants to cling to their bread.
The USA Today published an outline of the four proposals. They are:
>> Keep the BCS structure, but dump automatic conference qualifiers and other fluff that hurts interest and ratings for the games.
>> The original “plus one” where a No. 1 and No. 2 team is selected after all bowl games are played.
>> A seeded four-team playoff for four different “locale” scenarios:
- A. All three games at bowl sites.
- B. All three games open to bid process.
