Nebraska researching Wi-Fi options for fans at Memorial Stadium

Add Nebraska to the growing list of sports entities exploring innovative ways to accomodate their fans on game day.

Free wireless internet access for fans at Memorial Stadium is being considered now — so maybe, just maybe, there will be a day when all can use their smartphones and tablets to tweet or update Facebook or check scores of other games or watch instant highlights or whatever else they need to do.

It’d be a nice upgrade, even for a stadium that’s sold out its last 325 games and is set to unveil its newly renovated east-side this fall.

But is it feasible? And cost-effective? That’s what Husker athletic director Shawn Eichorst wants to investigate.

AD Shawn Eichorst talks Big Ten meetings, recruiting, new arena

Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst appeared for his monthly “Sports Nightly” radio hour Tuesday night; the Huskers’ new boss did not take calls but answered selected questions from email. Here’s a recap of his comments:

Eichorst played close to the vest on any changes in Big Ten division realignment and number of league games.

In sharp contrast to his former boss — Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez, who shared on his monthly radio show Tuesday all kinds of details, including that Big Ten schools agreed to stop scheduling FCS teams — Eichorst called Big Ten meetings “conversations amongst peers who are trying to gather as much facts as possible to render a decision that’s in the best interest of the league.”

Tom Osborne issues second statement on new AD Shawn Eichorst

After his absence Thursday at UNL chancellor Harvey Perlman’s press conference to announce Shawn Eichorst as the new athletic director — which was followed by a one-sentence statement just after the presser ended — current NU athletic director Tom Osborne issued a second statement on Eichorst’s hiring — and Osborne’s small-to-non-existent role in Perlman’s process.
