Husker notes from Thursday’s Outland banquet

Former Husker Jared Crick — Cletus Fischer Native Son Award in hand — delivered his acceptance speech at Thursday night’s Outland dinner. Then he turned and looked at Alabama’s Barrett Jones.

He congratulated Jones, the 2011 Outland Trophy winner. Then Crick revealed what impressed him most about Jones: The fact that the talented offensive tackle (who’s already graduated) will stay for his senior year.

“It takes a determined individual to give up as much money as you’re going to be giving up,” Crick said.

Crick considered entering the NFL draft after his junior season, but remained at Nebraska and earned his undergraduate degree last summer. As you all know, he tore his left pectoral muscle in October, ending his college career.

But Crick said he’ll …

Checking in with Caputo

Lots to talk about with a now-former Husker — center Mike Caputo, who was honored at the Outland Trophy banquet Thursday night.

Caputo wasn’t the only one recognized at the event. Terrence Moore and Jared Crick were there. Lavonte David wasn’t, but he still got a tribute video. Alabama’s Barrett Jones — the highly acclaimed offensive tackle — was the obvious headliner. (I’ll put a few more notes in another blog post shortly).

But Caputo, the one-time walk-on, hasn’t participated in a media interview since a December arrest nearly spoiled the end to a storybook career. He talked Thursday.

>> Caputo admitted he felt a little helpless after news broke of the Dec. 11 incident, when Lincoln police arrested him on suspicion of driving under …

Huskers get their Blackshirts

Nearly two dozen Nebraska defenders found black practice jerseys in their lockers right before Monday’s practice.

The NU coaching staff told the players after Saturday’s 24-3 win that they’d earned their Blackshirts. They wore them for the first time Monday.

Unofficially, the count stands at 20 — though that number has not been confirmed by the coaches, who are normally vague when discussing their approach to the Blackshirt tradition anyway.

Among those wearing black after practice Monday were four defensive ends, Cameron Meredith, Jason Ankrah, Josh Williams and Eric Martin; three defensive tackles, Baker Steinkuhler, Chase Rome and Terrence Moore; three linebackers, Lavonte David, Will Compton and Sean Fisher; three safties, Austin Cassidy, P.J. Smith and Daimion Stafford; and five other defensive backs, Alfonzo Dennard, …

Thursday’s Husker practice report

Nebraska coach Bo Pelini is hopeful that sophomore defensive tackle Thad Randle will not need surgery on his right knee, but he said it will take at least a week to make that determination.

Randle, a key reserve for the Huskers, has been ruled out for Saturday’s game against Michigan State. He’s to be evaluated further.

Without Randle in the lineup, Nebraska’s expected to have three defensive tackles in its rotation Saturday — junior Baker Steinkuhler, redshirt freshman Chase Rome and senior Terrence Moore. Redshirt freshman Jay Guy could also play.

A few more comments from Pelini after Thursday’s practice, which capped a productive week, according to the fourth-year coach.

Reserve DT injured, out for Saturday

Nebraska’s defensive tackles, already without senior Jared Crick, will be missing another member of their interior rotation this Saturday against Michigan State.

Sophomore defensive tackle Thad Randle suffered an undisclosed injury in practice, coach Bo Pelini confirmed through a spokesman Wednesday.

Randle, who’s played in six games, won’t suit up Saturday and will be evaluated further next week. He left the practice field Wednesday on crutches, with his right knee wrapped.

The injury leaves the Huskers with three healthy defensive tackles — junior Baker Steinkuhler, redshirt freshman Chase Rome and senior Terrence Moore. A fourth, redshirt freshman Jay Guy, played in his first game last week.

Crick tore a pectoral muscle in his chest and is out for the year.

Asked about the depth at …

Thursday’s practice report

Coach Bo Pelini met with reporters Thursday, and he confirmed that Nebraska will have a new starter at cornerback and could have a new member of the defensive tackle rotation this weekend at Minnesota.

Sophomore Stanley Jean-Baptiste, who had the important fourth-quarter interception against Ohio State, has earned a first-team spot during the last two weeks. “He’s growing,” Pelini said. “We feel good about where he is.”

All of the NU cornerbacks have improved lately, according to Pelini. “I think we’ve made a big jump there,” he said.

As for the defensive tackle position … the Huskers are trying to replace Jared Crick, who’s out for the year with a torn chest muscle. It’s redshirt freshman Chase Rome, senior Terrence Moore and sophomore Thad Randle …

Nebraska-Minnesota: Bo Pelini presser

LINCOLN — Good time for a break. Good strides made during the bye week.

That was the general tone of Nebraska head coach Bo Pelini’s press conference Monday as the 5-1 Huskers begin preparations for 1-5 Minnesota. NU is trying build off from the biggest comeback in school history — a 34-27 win over Ohio State — and spent three practices during its off week fixing errors on both sides of the ball.

“I think we’re well on the way to fixing ‘us’ in a lot of areas,” Pelini said. “I think we’re pretty close to making a big jump.”

The jump would probably start on the Blackshirt side of the ball, where Nebraska is 58th in total defense and 67th in scoring …

Jared Crick out for season

Defensive tackle Jared Crick will miss the remainder of his senior season after tearing a pectoral muscle, Nebraska coach Bo Pelini announced in a statement Wednesday.

Pelini said “further examination” revealed the severity of Crick’s injury. Crick left Saturday’s 34-27 win over Ohio State in the fourth quarter.

Here is Pelini’s statement…

“After further examination on Tuesday, it was determined that Jared Crick has a torn pectoral muscle and he will be out for the remainder of the season.

“I feel extremely bad for Jared. He is a young man who has represented this program in a first-class manner throughout his career. He made an unselfish decision to come back to Nebraska for his senior year and earn his degree, which he did this summer.

Burkhead run gives Nebraska early 7-0 lead

There’s the big play. Junior running back Rex Burkhead went 45 yards and Nebraska has a 7-0 lead.

On the first play of Nebraska’s second drive, Burkhead eluded a potential tackle in the backfield and then took advantage of some well-timed, well-executed downfield blocks. The 45-yard TD run was the second longest of his career.

With 8:29 left in the first quarter, Wyoming has the football again, trying to move the football against an inspired NU defense.

Senior Terrence Moore is starting in place of the injured Jared Crick. So far, Crick hasn’t been missed. The Huskers’ defense forced two three-and-outs on Wyoming’s first two drives, using a revamped defensive backfield to do it.

Here’s the lineup Nebraska debuted with in its secondary during Wyoming’s …
