AD Shawn Eichorst talks Big Ten meetings, recruiting, new arena

Nebraska athletic director Shawn Eichorst appeared for his monthly “Sports Nightly” radio hour Tuesday night; the Huskers’ new boss did not take calls but answered selected questions from email. Here’s a recap of his comments:

Eichorst played close to the vest on any changes in Big Ten division realignment and number of league games.

In sharp contrast to his former boss — Wisconsin’s Barry Alvarez, who shared on his monthly radio show Tuesday all kinds of details, including that Big Ten schools agreed to stop scheduling FCS teams — Eichorst called Big Ten meetings “conversations amongst peers who are trying to gather as much facts as possible to render a decision that’s in the best interest of the league.”

“No decisions – in my opinion …

Q&A: Creighton volleyball’s Natalie Hackbarth

Natalie Hackbarth has had her ups and downs as a member of the Creighton volleyball team.

After starting 16 games last season as a sophomore, Hackbarth has taken more of a leadership role while coming off the bench for emerging underclassmen Melanie Jereb and Leah McNary. With one year of eligibility remaining, Hackbarth will graduate a year early in May with a degree in journalism.

She will be honored before Saturday’s match with Illinois State along with seniors Brooke Boggs, Megan Bober and Brittany Moon.

Volleyball: Consistency key for continued success

The Creighton volleyball team is in the midst of one of its best seasons in school history.

The Jays are 21-3, while their 12-1 Missouri Valley record has them atop the conference standings. They are also riding a school-record nine-game winning streak.

With all of these accomplishments, the Jays could be looking towards the MVC tournament and beyond with only five conference games left.

But as coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth or any of her players would tell you, it’s all about taking things one game at a time.

“Every game is big right now, and they all count equally,” Booth said. “Each win takes us closer to our goal, but our focus right now has to be one game at a time.”

Booth’s message is …

Play at Nebraska. Make a career out of volleyball. Play in the Olympics.

Check. Check. Check.

Volleyball: Freshman outside hitter transferring

Taylor Simpson, a freshman outside hitter for Nebraska’s volleyball team, is transferring immediately, head coach John Cook announced in a statement Tuesday. Classes at NU began Monday.

“Taylor Simpson informed us over break that she would like to pursue another option and has made the decision to no longer be a part of the Nebraska volleyball program,” Cook said. “We have released her from her letter of intent in order for her to pursue another program and receive aid immediately. We wish Taylor nothing but the best of luck in the future as she will be missed as a member of the Nebraska volleyball team.”
